A truck caravan made its way through South Carolina on Interstate 85 Saturday as truck drivers head to Washington D.C. to protest COVID-19 mandates.
People came out in support along the highway holding American flags and waving as the trucks passed.
Convoys of truck protests across the country were inspired by truckers and others protesting coronavirus restrictions and other issues in the Canadian capital of Ottawa.
Dan Harvell, former chairman of the Anderson County Republican Party, helped organize the caravan along with the Anderson County Republican Party. He was standing on the side of I-85 among 75 people waiting for the convoy from Georgia to pass.
“We’re out here because we believe in the freedoms the constitution allows us and vies us,” he said. “The medical mandates that have been enforced upon Americans has done so much damage.”
Besides protesting vaccine mandates, the caravan highlights an appreciation for truckers of America and what they endure to transport needed items, he said.
“All along the route, these truck drivers are going to see multiple thousands of people during the day, cheering them on,” Harvell said. “Freedom is the most precious thing we have in America, we’ve been so restricted…in the last two years, people are making their voices heard now.”
