WEST COLUMBIA — Lexington County police agencies are searching for a fugitive who stole a truck and stopped at Bojangles after escaping from an ambulance while in police custody.

Daniel Hill, 30, escaped from the back of an ambulance while handcuffed near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Leaphart Road around 1 p.m. on Dec. 8, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Hill stole a truck and was last seen at the Bojangles on Augusta Highway outside Lexington, the sheriff’s department said.

The sheriff’s department did not say what charges Hill was arrested on while in police custody. It is unclear how he escaped from the ambulance.

Hill is considered armed and dangerous, the sheriff’s department said. The West Columbia Police Department and Town of Lexington Police Department are assisting with the search for Hill.

Lexington County deputies are working to pull surveillance video from the Bojangles and and nearby businesses to help find Hill, the sheriff’s department said.

Hill stole a burgundy 2005 Ford F350 truck with a tan stripe at the bottom, the sheriff’s department said. The truck has crew cab, running boards and a toolbox in the pickup bed.

Lexington County deputies set up a perimeter around the search area around 1:30 p.m., with K-9s on the ground and drones in the air assisting with the search. The sheriff’s department asked residents to look out for Hill, who was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and jeans, and call 911 if they spot him.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
