A California man was killed early Tuesday morning after his tractor-trailer was toppled by high winds on a Sierra Nevada highway.

The East Bay Times reported Tuesday that the tractor-trailer — which was holding an empty 53-foot box trailer — was overturned at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday on the southbound lane of Highway 395 in Mono County not far from Yosemite National Park.

The driver, a 61-year-old man from Riverside, sustained fatal injuries following the crash, the East Bay Times reported. His passenger, a 63-year-old man, was hospitalized with a shoulder injury.

Because of high winds at the time, a high-profile vehicle prohibition was set in place starting Monday evening. The prohibition ran through Tuesday morning.

The southbound lane reopened later Tuesday morning after it was closed for two hours following the accident.

Caltrans District 9, which encompasses Mono and Inyo counties and parts of Kern County, announced Tuesday that a high-wind advisory is set to continue through Tuesday. It has been expanded to include Highway 395 from the San Bernardino County line to the Nevada state line, State Route 14 from the Los Angeles County line to Highway 395 and State Route 58 from 15 miles west of Techahapi to the San Bernardino County line.

The agency is recommending motorists with campers and high-load vehicles not drive Tuesday.

Tire chains are required for other drivers going through State Route 158 and parts of Highway 395 in Mono County, the agency added.

The driver’s identity has not been revealed.
