Bond was set last week at $10,000 for a man suspected of attempting to steal a local furniture store’s moving truck while intoxicated.
Judge E.J. Fouratt of Chaves County Magistrate Court set the cash bond for Carl Burleson, 37, Nov. 22 during a first appearance in court.
Conditions of release imposed upon Burleson — should he make bail while awaiting trial on one count of vehicle burglary — require that he remain inside his residence between the hours of 1 p.m. and 8 a.m. An officer with the Roswell Police Department arrested Burleson Nov. 19 at 11:06 p.m. while conducting a welfare check at a 1000 block of South Main Street location.
Police first encountered Burleson while he was allegedly inside the furniture truck with its lights on. Court records state that when ordered to exit the truck, Burleson did so and appeared to be intoxicated, and had two bottles of vodka protruding from his pants pockets.
Wires located beneath the truck’s dashboard were also found to be disconnected.
When the officer asked Burleson where he worked, court records state Burleson answered that he did not have a job and was homeless, before saying he worked for the store.
When the officer asked Burleson for the name of his boss at the furniture store, court records state he admitted to not working for the store and that he did not have permission to be in the truck.
Court records state that when later contacted by police, the owner of the store confirmed Burleson was not an employee.
Burleson later allegedly told the police officer that he had been trying to take the truck but he did not know where he was going to drive it.
Electronic court records indicate that Burleson on Sept. 30 was served with a warrant for failure to appear in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court while out on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
Court records state he is now awaiting trial on one count each of receiving or transferring stolen vehicles; driving while license revoked; and improper use of evidence of registration in connection with an incident in July.
