BELMONT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The details and images shown on television do not tell the whole story about Ukraine, founder of the non-profit Sunflower of Peace Katya Malakhova said.

“Some of the towns and cities don’t have food and water, little kids and newborns are underground, there’s a lack of electricity- it’s a crisis,” Malakhova said. Being from Ukraine herself, Malakhova started Belmont-based Sunflower of Peace to provide donated medical and humanitarian packages to Eastern Europe. On Wednesday Sunflower of Peace will send truck-loads of medical supplies to Ukraine from Woburn, Malakhova said.

According to Sunflower of Peace’s Facebook page, the backpacks to be sent overseas are specially designed to be used by highly skilled military combat groups like marines, Special Forces, and intelligence units. The non-profit said that each bag can be used and shared by five to ten people and includes first aid supplies, medical instruments, and means for survival in harsh conditions.

Sunflower of Peace has raised over half a million dollars at the time of posting.

“We are very grateful for everything everyone has done here in the U.S,” Malakova said. Malakhova went on to say that another way to help Ukrainians would be to call on local representatives to grant refugees visitor visas.

WBZ’s Chris Fama (@CFamaWBZ) reports.
