MILFORD — The U.S. Postal Service is working to find those whose mail was destroyed or damaged on Thursday in a mail truck fire.

No one was injured in the 12:20 p.m. truck fire on Sidney Street, but the truck was destroyed and much of the mail was damaged.

“Unfortunately, some of the mail is undeliverable due to fire and water damage,” the postal service said in a statement. “We are notifying impacted customers.”

Amy Gibbs, a communications specialist for USPS, said postal workers are going through the mail to find out which pieces are deliverable.

If a piece of mail is too damaged to be delivered but the address is legible, the post office will send a post card to the person informing them of the fire.

“I think a lot of the mail was unsalvageable,” Gibbs said.

Those waiting for a specific piece of mail should contact those in charge of sending it just in case it was damaged or destroyed, Gibbs said.

The cause of the fire is not known, Milford Fire Chief Mark Nelson said. He said the cause would likely remain unknown due to the amount of damage to the postal truck.
